Basket Weaving

Mathew Gibney's residency at Annaberg has been extended for the month of August thanks to popular demand. Come learn about this special part of St. John's heritage at the Annaberg Ruins Wednesday to Friday from 10am to 2pm throughout the month of August. Dates are 1, 2, 7, 8, 9 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, 30.

At one time St John was well known for their traditional baskets. Basket making was so essential that up until the 1950’s basket weaving was actually taught in public school. Now it is becoming a lost art with the younger generation not being exposed to this craft. Many basket weavers are passing on and only a few folks possess this skill of making traditional baskets.

"Your fine basket is part of and has its roots in St. John tradition and history." Louise Roberts Sewer (from 'Wist Work' 1997)
